Umami Burger opened its 5th location in two years last Wednesday, making a very good case for future global hegemony. Well, okay, maybe city-wide hegemony. Whatever. The sleek new spot went in right next door to Mexicali Cocina Cantina in the space that used to be that restaurant's banquet room. The new Umami does in fact look sort of like a banquet hall, with chandeliers and marble countertops and lots of black paint and glass. Check out the stuffed swan behind the bar.

Our favorite part is the walk-up bar off the small front patio. A window. A pint of beer or a Umami-Rita. (Really.) There are none of Cake Monkey's pop tarts, but there is a seasonal apple pie and, of course, all those burgers. The menu is pretty much the same as the other four Umami Burgers, but with an expanded, “more seasonal” beer list. As for where they'll expand next, downtown is probably next.
