UCLA only accepted about one in five in-state applicants for fall, a fraction that represents the toughest admission rate of all University of California schools, including UC Berkeley.

The Westwood school admitted 13,020 freshmen from a record 57,651 applicants, the university announced Wednesday. Admitted freshmen had an overall grade point average of 4.37, compared to 4.35 last year. At nearly 43 percent, Asian-Americans comprised the largest ethnic group of incoming freshman. The next largest groups were Caucasians at 31.5 percent and Latinos at 14.5 percent.

“As these numbers prove, UCLA continues to be a strong draw for highly qualified students because of the first-rate education they can get here and the abundance of activities and research opportunities,'' UCLA Chancellor Gene Block states. “They also have access to more arts, cultural and athletic events on campus than most cities offer.''

The Los Angles Times reports that, statewide, the UC system has wait-listed 10,700 prospective students.
