An Uber driver was stabbed in the face and neck during a robbery early today in South Los Angeles, police said.

The attack in the 600 block of West 61st Street was reported at 3:45 a.m., Los Angeles Police Department Officer Drake Madison told us.

The driver had stopped there to pick up two people he thought comprised his fare, said LAPD Sgt. John Mumma. When he began to believe the suspects weren't the people he was supposed to pick up, the driver asked for directions, the sergeant said.

“The guy stopped, thought it was his fare he was supposed to pick up, and started to ask for directions,” Mumma told us. “He got jacked.”

Police aren't ruling out the possibility that the pair, described only as a man and a woman, requested the Uber ride. (Uber rides are requested via smartphone app).

However, that seems like a long shot to us since they would have had to have an app with a credit card registered at Uber, likely leaving a quick trail for detectives to pick up.

In any case, the driver was found by arriving officers “sitting in a vehicle with wounds to his face and neck,” Madison said.

A woman was detained after “quick work” by 77th Street Division cops on the street and was under arrest for allegations unknown, he said.

The man believed to have been involved in the attack was still at large, according to Madison.

Uber spokeswoman Eva Behrend sent us this statement:

Our heart goes out to the victim. We are working to gather more information about this incident and stand ready to work with the authorities and help them in any way that we can.
