Several news outlets are now confirming the death of Type O Negative singer Peter Steele yesterday. The goth metal frontman was 48 and the cause of death is reported as “heart failure.”

Before breaking big with Type O Negative, the Brooklyn-based Steele had fronted the influential 80s group Carnivore. In the '90s, Type O's Broken Kisses proved a somehow unexpected huge seller for the band, who continued releasing material (including an awesome version of a song from the Hedwig musical) trough 2003.

Problems with substance abuse and the law (Steele even served time) derailed the group and the singer's career during the 2000s. Persistent rumors of a full-scale comeback will end now with today's unfortunate news.
