Isai RochaAfter allegedly submitting more than 8,000 fraudulent voter registration applications on behalf of homeless people, two men have been charged with 41 counts related to voter fraud, according to the L.A. County District Attorney’s office.
Carlos Antonio De Bourbon Montenegro, 53, allegedly handed in the applications between July and October and if convicted of all charges, can face up to 15 years and eight months in state prison.
In a case filed Thursday, November 12, , Montenegro and Marcos Raul Arevalo, 34, were each charged with one count of conspiracy to commit voter fraud, eight counts of voter fraud, four counts of procuring and offering a false or forged instrument and four misdemeanor counts of interference with a prompt transfer of a completed affidavit. Montenegro was charged with an additional 10 counts of voter fraud seven counts of procuring and offering a false or forged instrument, two counts of perjury and five misdemeanor counts of interference with a prompt transfer of a completed affidavit.
Montenegro, who attempted a 2020 mayoral run in Hawthorne, had a Facebook page in his name that posted about an organization called “Homeless Voters Matter.”
On October 4, a post from the Facebook page read, “Our organization was formed to register to vote individuals who are homeless by visiting encampments in the inner cities…”
The arraignment will take place, Tuesday, at the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center in downtown L.A.
