Streets downtown could be tied up during key hours for two days as officers, brass, fans, family and friends mourn the death of former Los Angeles police Chief Daryl Gates, who died April 16 at the age of 83.

On Monday a public, closed-casket viewing will begin at noon at the Police Administration Building, 100 W. First St. On Tuesday a private funeral will be held at 9 a.m. at Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels downtown. A public honors ceremony, however, will be held in the cathedral plaza.

Tuesday morning (6:30 to noon) traffic in the area will be especially tough, police said, with Temple Street closed between Broadway and Grand Avenue, and Hill Street closed between Temple and Ord streets. Police from throughout Southern California are expected to attend the funeral.
