Twinkies have proven themselves as indestructible as cockroaches. In what Hostess is billing as “The sweetest comeback in the history of ever,” the spongey cake-like object with the cream-like filling will be back in stores July 15. Which means no more buying the overpriced pre-Hostess-bankruptcy leftovers on eBay and hoarding them in your garage.

Other iconic “snack cakes,” such as Donettes and CupCakes, will also be returning.

“A lot of impostor products have come to the market while Hostess has been off the shelves,” Daren Metropoulos, a principal of the investment firm Metropoulos & Co., which teamed up with Apollo Global Management to buy a variety of Hostess snacks, told the Associated Press. Fake fake cakes? Quelle horreur!

Hostess Brands Inc. struggled for years before filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization in early 2012 amid union troubles. Last November, Hostess announced it would liquidate its assets, which triggered a rush on Hostess snack cakes. Stores sold out of the most popular brands within hours.

Hostess sold off its brands to different buyers. Metropoulos & Co. and Apollo bought Twinkies and other Hostess cakes for $410 million. The company also owns Pabst Brewing Co. — which could lead to some cross-promotion, apparently.

“There is certainly a natural association with the two,” Metropoulos said. “There could be some opportunities for them to seen together.”

Twinkies and PBR? Well, they are both crap fit only for hipster stoners, so that could make sense.

The price remains the same: A box of 10 Twinkies will cost $3.99.

While the original Twinkie recipe also won't change, Hostess President Rich Seban envisions Hostess expanding its product lineup. Different textures, such as crunchy, could be added to the mix, as well as different flavors.

“We can have some fun with that mixture,” he told the AP.

He also said there are many trendy health attributes the company could tap into, such as gluten-free, added fiber, low sugar and low sodium.

OK let's not go too far here. No one is going to buy a high-fiber, low-sugar, gluten-free Twinkie.

Well, maybe if the cream filling is goji-flavored.
