The Emmy nominations were announced yesterday and as always, entertainment media has something to say about who was recognized and who wasn’t. TV Party is no exception.

The biggest, most glaring omission this year has got to be the cast and producers behind Pose (save for Billy Porter, who did get a nod). We just binged the FX show on Netflix and seeing its two seasons as a back to back package versus weekly program, really highlighted the LGBTQ struggle explored while at the same time provided true spectacle and a history lesson about the NYC ballroom scene and the HIV crisis in the ’80s/’90s. The show is filled with laughs, tears and realness. We finished it in awe of the mostly trans cast and vibrant story-telling. The snub for best drama and lead MJ Rodriguez is simply unforgivable.

Starz’ Vida offered powerful performances and provocative stories reflecting Latin culture that really deserved inclusion, even more than some of the shows that were bestowed. Gentefied on Netflix, which covers similar subject matter, is also more than worthy but got nada. This lack of recognition of great “Latinx” entertainment is getting called out and it absolutely should be.

A close look at the noms overall shows increased representation of great Black actors and shows such as Watchmen, Insecure, black-ish, and Westworld (Jeffrey Wright and Thandie Newton), all of which are right on. And while we were also happy to see Dead To Me, Schitt’s Creek, Unorthox, and Curb Your Enthusiasm on the list, there were even more “oh, that again” shows that frankly could and should have been judged by a higher standard  (in comparison to previous winning seasons). Doing so could have opened up the playing field and perhaps given more quality TV shows -of which there were many- a shot this year. Nominee list below.
