Rodarte's arty designs made Kate and Laura Mulleavy part of fashion's elite years before Black Swan. After debuting in 2005 and earning Anna “The Devil” Wintour's stamp of approval early on in their career, the sisters with no formal training (and a studio in downtown) have dressed a clientele that includes big-name celebrities and even Michelle Obama, won a Council of Fashion Designers of America award and created lines for Target and the Gap. Hot on the heels of Black Swan, MOCA's “Rodarte: States of Matter” features costumes from the ballet drama worn by Natalie Portman, displayed alongside mostly black and white pieces from their 2008 and 2010 collections. Not bad for two not-so-old ladies from Pasadena.

Tuesdays-Sundays. Starts: March 4. Continues through June 5, 2011
