The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has extended its mask requirements until September 13, 2021.

The mandate covers U.S. transportation networks at airports, commercial aircrafts, over-the-road buses like Greyhound, commuter buses and rail systems.

The original mandate was set to expire on May 11 before the announced extension.

“The federal mask requirement throughout the transportation system seeks to minimize the spread of COVID-19 on public transportation,” The TSA’s Darby LaJoye said in a statement. “Right now, about half of all adults have at least one vaccination shot and masks remain an important tool in defeating this pandemic. We will continue to work closely with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to evaluate the need for these directives and recognize the significant level of compliance thus far.”

The CDC recently updated guidance for fully vaccinated travelers in the U.S., allowing them to travel without the need of negative COVID-19 test, but were still required to wear masks.

Travelers who violate the mask TSA mask rules may be barred from entering a screening area, or be fined anywhere between $250 to $1,500.
