The Tropicalia Festival, taking place in Pomona on Saturday and Sunday, is a glorious and all-encompassing celebration that this year sees the likes of Los Tigres del Norte, Caifanes, Kali Uchis, Chicano Batman and Cuco top the bill. A little lower down is Pittsburgh native/L.A. resident Matt Koenig’s Undercover Dream Lovers, a groove-based indie/psychedelic project. We chatted to Koenig about what we can expect.
L.A. WEEKLY: Where and when did the band form, and what was the mission?
MATT KOENIG: The band is really just for live shows, it’s been a rotating cast of players. Since I moved to L.A., it’s been a pretty solid group though. The project started early 2016. I write, produce, play and mix all the songs myself.
Describe the sound… How has it evolved?
The sound is a vibrant blend of psychedelic guitars, buzzy synths and groovy baselines. I like to think about all the instruments as one complex sound.
Are you looking forward to Tropicalia Fest? Why is this event special?
I am looking forward to Tropicalia! I’m really excited to show how far the live show has come since moving to L.A. and think it will be a good crowd.
What can we expect from your set?
New material, and expect to dance.
When that’s done, what else do you have coming up?
We have a New Year’s Eve show with Poolside at the Fonda. Also I’m getting ready to release my first full length album early next year and will be announcing some touring around that as well. Really exciting few months ahead!
