Orange County high school graduate Matt Barkley has been picked by USC Trojans footballcoach Pete Carroll to be the team's next quarterback. Barkley, who will follow in the immediate footsteps of Mark Sanchez, is believed to be the first freshman QB in Trojan history, reports Associated Press. While sophomore Aaron Corp had enjoyed an early edge in the competition, an injury has slowed down his performance during practices.

Local fans will get their first game glimpse of Barkley Sunday, September 5, in the Trojans' match with San Jose State at the Coliseum.
