See our latest: Murder of Transgender Woman Caught on Video

A transgender woman was murdered early today in East Hollywood, police said.

So far there's no indication it was a hate crime, however, Los Angeles Police Department Det. R. Martinez told L.A. Weekly. Furthermore, earlier reports that a robbery was involved don't appear to be true, he said.

The victim was described by an L.A. County Department of Coroner official as a 47-year-old from Pasadena:

The coroners' office had not positively identified the person, he said, and loved ones had yet to be notified.

The attack in the 600 block of North Kenmore Avenue was reported at 3 a.m., LAPD Officer Bruce Borihanh said.

Detective Martinez said that two to four men had approached the victim and that at least one of them opened fire. Borihanh said the person was shot in the head.

“Two-to-four males approach, then he is shot,” Martinez said.

The transgender woman was rushed to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, police said.

The victim was dressed as a woman, Martinez said, but there was no indication this was a hate crime. The detective also said it did not appear that anything had been taken from the transgender woman and that, at this point, robbery is not being considered a motive.

It wasn't clear if the males who approached the victim were gang members, Martinez said. They were wearing “dark clothing,” he said.

Anyone with information about the attack was asked to call 800-222-8477.
