You've heard of “Pay it don't say it”? This year, how about applying that principle to Valentine's Day goodies? If you really love your significant other, surely you can afford to spend several hundred dollars on chocolates or a fancy cake? Look at it this way: It's way cheaper than an engagement ring!

5. 12 rose cupcakes:

No woman with a brain larger than a pea wants a dozen of those industrial, scentless florist-shop “roses.” Especially when you can give her a dozen rose cupcakes instead. These mini-cakes from Crumbs — the bake shop has six locations in the greater L.A. area — feature vanilla cream cheese frosting tinted red and pink on top of chocolate, vanilla and red velvet cake. $42 for 12.

4. Ooh La La cake:

The heart-stopping Ooh La La cake by Patisserie Angelica, available from Dean & Deluca, consists of four tiers of chocolate cake layered with raspberry buttercream and homemade raspberry preserves, frosted with a thick chocolate buttercream. Then the whole 2.25-pound heart-shaped mess is covered in layers of red-tinted white chocolate ruffles. (It's just one day out of the year; try not to stress about that red dye.) $110 — high-class ho-hos cakes ain't cheap.

3. A Love Note Box:

The Love Note Box of six cupcakes from Magnolia Bakery tests your sweetie's spelling skills. The vanilla and chocolate cupcakes with vanilla buttercream spell out your L-O-V-E. (Hmmm, we wonder if you can get three that spell L-U-V.) They are wrapped in precious pale pink tulle and tied with bakery twine and a vintage tag for $32. Available in stores only and for advanced orders only.

2. 12 months of Godiva:

A year's worth of Godiva chocolate would not be taken amiss by most. The fancy chocolates are delivered monthly to your doorstep — so hopefully there are no hungry stray dogs roaming your neighborhood. The collection includes a 19-piece classic gold ballotin of truffles, a 12-piece “ultimate” dessert truffles, a 36-piece biscuit (meaning cookies) gift box and an 18-piece box of “signature” truffles. 400 bucks. Enjoy it, Ann Romney, wherever you are.

1. $100 pink layer cake:

This pink ombre layer cake from L.A.'s Platine sweet shop, sold by Williams-Sonoma, is the most beautiful cake in the world if not the universe. The four-layer vanilla bean-butter cake, in graduated colors from red to hot pink to baby pink to yellow, is frosted with a thick layer of vanilla buttercream, then finished with a swirl of rosettes in graduated shades of pink. It goes for $100 for a 6.5-inch cake that feeds 8-12. It's almost too pretty to cut into and enjoy. Almost …
