Proyecto Jardin Winter Clean-up

“Every Day Is Earth Day” is Proyecto Jardin's motto. The garden behind White Memorial Hospital in Boyle Heights supplies produce and medicinal plants to the community, and also is home to a park and exercise area. Join this cleaning session to prepare the soil for spring planting, and partake in a light lunch. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes, long sleeves and full-length pants.

Marcus Samuelsson at Post and Beam

Ethiopian-born, Swedish-raised chef Marcus Samuelsson of Harlem's Red Rooster is bringing “reimagined soul classics” to Post and Beam for a dinner commemorating Black History Month. Expect Ethiopian tacos on injera bread, braised oxtail with fried plantains, and crawfish beignets with honey-beet tartar sauce. A portion of the proceeds benefits the L.A. chapter of the Careers Through Culinary Arts program.

New York City recently banned supersized drinks — but can such an endeavor convince people to adopt healthy behaviors? This is the kind of question that Zocalo Public Square will examine in a discussion about “health propaganda.” The panel includes Los Angeles County director of public health Jonathan Fielding, University of Minnesota social psychologist Traci Mann and UCLA health economist Frederick J. Zimmerman, with David H. Freedman of The Atlantic as moderator.
