Hot Sauce Talk
Longtime Los Angeles Times food writer and noted Arabist Charles Perry will deliver one of his excellent Culinary Historians of Southern California talks. In this one, Perry explores the origins of hot sauce, which covers tomato ketchup, Worcestershire sauce “and the 17th-century English infatuation with Asian condiments such as mango pickle and soy sauce. Their thrifty attempts to counterfeit the foreign products led to the first bottled sauces. From there, tabasco and Sriracha were inevitable.” After the talk, there will be a reception with themed food. Because there should be.
WHAT: Where Did Hot Sauce Come From?
WHEN: Saturday, Oct. 11, 10:30 a.m.; reception at 11:30 a.m.
WHERE: Los Angeles Public Library, Mark Taper Auditorium, 630 W. Fifth St., dwntwn.; (323) 663-5407.
COST: Free.
