Sour beer fans and yeast lovers prepare yourself: Steingarten L.A. is hosting a tap takeover by The Bruery at 6 p.m. this Thursday, March 21 — that's tonight. Widely sought and often hard-to-find kegs will be yielded to the West L.A. bar for tapping, with selected beers additionally available in bottles.

Steingarten L.A. can be counted on for great local and national draft beers in addition to a tremendous bottle list, but their craft beer events are the biggest draw. Tap takeovers involve one brewery supplying a number of kegs, at least a half dozen if not more, for a temporary overhaul of the draft list. Dave Watrous, Beverage Consultant for Steingarten L.A. says, “Tap takeovers are a great way to showcase the diversity in a brewery's lineup. Furthermore it's an awesome way to see how their beers develop over time.”

Taste a spectrum of brews from Loakal Red (6.9%) — amber ale with hops and vanilla — to Oude Tart (7.5%) — a straightforward slightly funky sour beer — to to Melange #3 (15.5%) — a thick, oaky beer brewed with three house favorites including Black Tuesday. Also in attendance will be Autumn Maple (Belgian-style brown 10%), The Bruery's seasonal retaliation against pumpkin beer, similarly sweet and spicy but brewed with yams instead. Look for Nottenroth (2.1%) — a batch of Hottenroth wheat beer that didn't ferment expectedly but produced an interesting low-alcohol wheat with kumquats. Finally, two years of Saison de Lente in addition to many, many more.

The Bruery in Placentia, CA, has been making award-winning beer since 2008 with the release of Orchard White, one of their earliest beers. They do not filter or pasteurize their beer and every one is bottle-conditioned, allowing carbonation to happen in the bottle with living yeast. Expect unconventional flavors and barrel-aged, often strong beers. Treat yourself to the tap takeover and bring a friend who will be indebted to you for challenging their idea of the very definition of beer.
