When vocalist Anthony Green broke away from the Orange County screamo outfit Saosin six years ago, it didn't look like the best of career moves. Saosin was a rising star on the post-hardcore scene and poised to sign a major-label contract; Green was headed back home to Pennsylvania.

There, however, the new band Circa Survive was formed around Green's deliriously overwrought voice and shredders Colin Frangicetto and Brendan Eksrom. Three albums later, the quintet has proven themselves far more than just Warped Tour fodder.

Somewhat paralleling the musical progression of their tourmates Coheed and Cambria, Circa Survive's new album Blue Sky Noise — their first for Atlantic after a couple discs on indie Equal Vision Records — takes their sound further into prog-rock territory, with expansive arrangements and song-within-a-song surprises that, while ambitious and dramatic, still rely on Green to carry to the room.

He can, and often with admirable flair, as anybody who saw him onstage in a dress on past Warped Tours can attest.

Equally at home in that environment, or onstage at Coachella (where they played in 2007), Circa Survive this fall embarks on a big headlining tour that includes a Nov. 6 date at the Avalon. But first, the five-piece has some dates supporting the Deftones — and tonight's one-off at the cozy Bootleg Theater.

Elsewhere: Quite a lineup the next five days at the U.S. Open of Surfing at Huntington Beach — Cold Wars Kids and the Soft Pack kick off the free series that includes Bedouin Soundclash and Iration on Wednesday, Switchfoot and Timmy Curran on Thursday, Cobra Starship and Street Drum Corps on Friday and Weezer and Hot Hot Heat on Saturday). … Japanaese hard rockers D'espairsRay play the Roxy. … Eels cross the county line to play the Galaxy Concert Theatre in Santa Ana. … And Central Valley indie rockers Rademacher visit to play Spaceland, with Hexham Heads supporting.

Also: Peanut Butter Wolf at Cinespace; William Fitzsimmons, Yellow Red Sparks and the Sister Ruby Band at the Hotel Cafe; Cola-Cola, the Active Set and Loch and Key as part of International Pop Overthrow at the Echo; Sage and Satellite Crush at the Viper Room; cabaret with the Brown Betties at the Mint; Marianne Keith at Saint Rocke; Hillsong Live at Club Nokia; Gustavo Dudamel conducting Gershwin and Bernstein at the Hollywood Bowl; Cue the Moon and Woolen at the Silverlake Lounge; and the Neighborhood Bullies at the Redwood Bar.
