After a three-year hiatus, South Bay’s beloved reggae-rock group Tomorrows Bad Seeds are back together and ready to pick up right where they left off with a brand new single and music video. At two sold-out reunion shows in their hometown of Hermosa Beach earlier this year, it was clear that although the band had made little noise in recent years, the love from their fans had not been lost.

“We owe it all to our fans,” says Tomorrows Bad Seeds’ frontman Moises “Moi” Juarez. “Our fans inspired us to start playing music as TBS again. The demand for it was there and we had spent the last two years developing an arsenal of songs that are ready to go, so it was just a natural path.”

Formed in 2003, Tomorrows Bad Seeds took L.A. by storm with their punk-rock, pop and reggae-influenced style. The band’s ability to connect with their fan base quickly brought them to the top of the budding California reggae scene in 2004 and beyond.

“We met in the South Bay through mutual friends that were in a graffiti crew together, while also sharing our love for surfing the Redondo Beach breakwall and Hermosa Beach Pier,” Moi recalls. “Tomorrows Bad Seeds is a homage to kids who grew up in negative situations or broken homes like us, who turned it around, succeeded and made something positive out of themselves. … We've often been called the ‘Bad Seeds,’ but instead of embodying something negative or rebellious, we’re changing the perception of bad meaning ‘bad’ to bad meaning ‘good.’” 

Tomorrows Bad Seeds toured heavily for nearly eight years, selling out venues across the country before deciding to take a break to focus on other artistic projects, spend time with family and, ultimately, get re-inspired. (“I just had a son and named him Kaden,” says Moi, “and he is my new inspiration in life.”) The band’s third full-length album and most recent work, The Great Escape, was released in June of 2012 and received mixed reviews from fans that didn't understand their increasingly pop-influenced sound.

Soon after, Moi and TBS guitarists/back-up vocalists Matt McEwan and Sean Chapman formed a side project called LIFE in order to further develop their evolving style apart from the reputation of Tomorrows Bad Seeds’ heavier sound. The trio released an EP in 2014, but soon realized that it was time to give their diehard fans something they had been longing for — new music from Tomorrows Bad Seeds.

On Thursday, Nov. 12, the band will do just that with a free hometown show at Patrick Molloy's, celebrating release of their newest single, “Throwback.” Produced by Lewis Richards at 17th Street Recording Studio in Costa Mesa, the single is the band’s first release since 2012 and features R&B singer Garrett Douglas.

“'Throwback' is about reminiscing on the innocent times in life, when it was all one big learning experience,” says Moi.

The band will accompany the new single with the release of a music video, which was recorded in their hometown on the Hermosa Beach Pier. “The concept is all about keeping it real and staying connected with the important things in life: friends and family,” explains Moi. The video was shot and directed guerrilla-style by John DeTemple, with friends and family all coming out to support during the main shot of the video.

Tomorrows Bad Seeds are currently working on their fourth album with producers Marshall Goodman of the original Sublime and Cameron Webb, with the goal of a summer 2016 release and more singles, videos and remixes dropping along the way. The band will also embark on a national tour in support of the new album after its release.

Having been an active part of the L.A. new-school reggae scene for almost a decade, Moi offers some perspective on its evolution. “The scene has definitely grown in size and involvement, and it's awesome to see the influence this positive music has had on the next generation. We all feel blessed to be a part of it, and it's definitely a family type of thing. Everyone supports everyone.”

He finishes the interview with some words of gratitude. “Thank you to all the fans, friends and family that have supported us throughout our journey. We are so blessed to have the chance to play music for you all.”
