During a discussion of reforming the city's pension system, Tom LaBonge notes that pension benefits were sweetened to keep LAPD competitive with other departments so L.A. could recruit and retain police.

Then came this:

“We can't live better than the people we serve.”

Well, given that members of the City Council make nearly $180,000 per year, that one is gonna be pretty tough.

LaBonge urged the council to get going on pension reform, noting the if they don't take action, time will pass and the situation will worsen. “Everything goes so fast. Just the other day, it was 1999….”

Yeah, dude, totally.
