Tom Bergin's Tavern on Fairfax had a somewhat rocky year in 2013, closing in July after it had undergone extensive renovations in 2012. And now, the 77-year-old Irish pub is really celebrating the new year, as it reopens this Saturday, Jan. 4, under new owner Derek Schreck.

The announcement was made on its Facebook page last Friday, Dec. 27. Buzz of a reopening under new ownership began back in October. Tom Bergin's was slated to open Nov. 30, but the date was pushed forward due to “unforeseen complications,” according to a Nov. 27 update on its social media page.

It will be a soft reopen, as the pub will not have a full food menu — due to permit delays — until the end of this month. There will be a full bar menu, though, complete with a handful of snacks. And the interior will remain the same as its most recent remodel.

Longtime regulars of Tom Bergin's, having seen it close then reopen only to close again, might not be too picky — instead just happy, along with the rest of us, to have the place open again.
