A suspected robber dressed in a Lakers uniformed got his ass kicked by a security guard downtown but eventually got away, prompting police this week to distribute his description in an attempt to catch the low scorer.

The robbery attempt at West Third and Figueroa streets in Bunker Hill was reported early Thursday. Los Angeles police say a suspect in Lakers garb got out of a van, approached the guard, produced a Tec-9 semiautomatic assault gun, and demanded the 33-year-old victim's wallet.

The suspect ordered the victim down and pointed a gun at his head as he dropped to his knees. However, the guard grabbed the gun, hit the suspect in the head with his own flashlight, pummeled him in the groin and took off running, Tec-9 in-hand, police said.

And it looks like authorities recovered enough evidence, the gun's ammo magazine, prescription eyeglasses, the bloodstained flashlight, and the gun, to nail this Lakers fan if they find him. “We hope we'll able to identify the robber through prints or DNA,” Lt. Paul Vernon said.

The suspect was described as a black man in his 40s with a gash in his head who was driving an early 1990s black van with a luggage rack. Anyone with information about the suspect was asked to call Det. Al Rasch of LAPD's Central Robbery Unit at 213-972-1245.
