Tobiah Steinmetz Hospitalized after Shooting on Pacific Coast Highway in Laguna Beach

LAGUNA BEACH, CA (March 23, 2021) – Thursday evening, Tobiah Steinmetz, 36, was shot at and arrested after a police chase on Highway 1.

The incident began around 6:19 p.m. According to reports, a Mercedes-Benz sedan was involved in a multi-car crash on Highway 1 near Bay Crest Drive. The driver later identified as Steinmetz, fled the scene.

Police followed him into Newport Beach before returning to Laguna Beach on Pacific Coast Highway. Shortly after, the chase ended when police used their vehicles to block the suspect near Cardinal Drive.

Per reports, Steinmetz attempted to escape the scene on foot. However, he was shot at by police as soon as he got out of the Mercedes. Shortly after, paramedics arrived and took him to a local hospital with severe injuries.

Investigators later revealed that no one else was injured amidst the pursuit. However, it is not yet clear what prompted the police to open fire.

As of Friday morning, Steinmetz was listed in critical but stable condition. At this time, an active investigation remains ongoing.
