Updated at the bottom: The dogs were found safe today.

The guy (it's always a guy) who took off with someone's SUV near the Costco in Culver City Sunday got more than he bargained for.

Really: Who cares about a 1999 Lexus RX300 SUV? (Correct answer: Your mom).

But seriously, it had precious cargo. And now Culver City cops are asking for your help in tracking down the ride and the pups inside:

Cops say the fine import SUV was stolen between 4:30 and 5:30 p.m. Sunday near Washington Boulevard and Glencoe Avenue.

According to Culver City police:

The vehicle contained three dogs, two Chihuahuas and a Havanese (see attached photos). The owner of the dogs is offering a reward for their safe return.

The SUV has California plate 4EEB703. Cops don't say what color it is, but they only seemed to sell them in gold, silver and gray.

If you see the SUV or the pets, call police at 310-837-1221.

[Update at 2:42 p.m.]: Culver City cops told us the three dogs were found safe at 11:30 a.m. today. They were in the SUV, which was located after a “systematic search,” police said. According a statement:

… The dogs appeared to be in good health and were immediately removed from the vehicle. The victim was called to the scene and reunited with her dogs. She was extremely thankful for the positive outcome.
