Three Americans have been killed in Baja California — two quite close to the border near San Diego — over the last month or so.

Parsing Mexican news reports, NBC San Diego learned that the victim felled farthest from the border, 26-year-old San Diegan Antonio Acevedo, was fatally shot April 30 north of Rosarito as two of this children watched from a car.

Authorities believe the ambush attack …

… was a case of mistaken identity.

Acevedo worked as a guard for a company called Elite security, and officials think gunmen mistook him for a rival.

Then, on May 3, a man named David Garcia was shot multiple times outside the Hotel Pueblo Amigo Plaza Casino hotel in an upscale area — the Zona Rio — near the border.

Within walking distance of that hotel, a 27-year-old named Artemio Gonzalez Jr. was fatally shot in the parking lot of upscale dance club Bar Dubai on May 22, according to NBC San Diego.

Mexican officials say U.S. citizenship didn't appear to have anything to do with the murders.
