Update 11:25 p.m.: L.A. Sheriff Alex Villanueva told KTLA 5 that curfews will continue daily until organized protests end, as he accused looters of using nonviolent protests as cover.

Los Angeles County will again be under curfew 6 p.m.-6 a.m. Tuesday night as many Angelenos run afoul of these restrictions.

On Monday the LAPD’s Hollywood division alone reported a daily record of nearly 600 arrests, mostly for curfew violations. All told, thousands of Angelenos have been arrested since the start of mass demonstrations in Los Angeles. Despite attempts to crack down on looting, the vast majority of arrests were not connected to these crimes.

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Board of Police Commissioners held a Zoom meeting today, its first public forum since tens of thousands of Angelenos took to the streets to protest police brutality after the death of George Floyd. The meeting hit its initial 500-person cap within minutes, and more than three hours after the meeting’s start time over 16,000 viewers were watching online.

The majority of presenting public comments were scathing and critical of the LAPD, as well as the commission’s oversight of the LAPD and tech issues surrounding the meeting. Many called for Chief Michel Moore to be fired, particularly in light of his quickly retracted statement Monday evening blaming protesters for the death of George Floyd.

Many commenters also noted the LAPD’s own history of brutality and killing of African Americans.

The Los Angeles chapter of Black Lives Matter and others on social media had encouraged people to call in and share their concerns.
