Yes, that's the voice of Julieta Venegas on the re-imagined “Mientes,” one of the five tracks on El Guincho's new EP Piratas de Sudamérica.

El Guincho, the nom de tune of Barcelona experimentalist Pablo Díaz-Reixa, fueled some underground buzz with his 2007 album Alegranza. A principal in the Spanish band Coconot, he fashions otherworldly soundscapes out of samples, keyboards and dashes of tropicalia, dub, Afrobeat and rock.

His EP — out next week on vinyl on the Young Turks imprint (home to The xx and Holy Fuck) — offers spaced-out excursions with five South American standards, including Miguel Matamoros “Mientes,” Orefiche y Valdespi's “Hindou” and Noro Morales y Miguelito Valdés' “Marimba” (on which Adrián de Alfonso guests).

El Guincho, whose sophomore album Pop Negro, is due this fall, was last spotted in L.A. hanging with the Dublab guys in a rain forest — the Natural History Museum's rain forest, that is. Check out their “VisionVersion” video for “Kalise,” recorded at the museum.

As for the real deal, El Guincho will be at Spaceland on Saturday, with the Holloys supporting.
