This Weekend: A 24-Hour Art & Dance Party with Doughnuts

While financial analysts speculate about the not-so-sugar-coated demise of the cupcake industry, another sweet pastry is experiencing its own renaissance, at least maybe in the art world. The doughnut, a traditionally symmetrical, doughy ring of frosted near-perfection, is the cupcake's delightfully modern alternative, and tomorrow it's being honored for the second year in a row at the LACMA-adjacent pop-up art gallery, ForYourArt.

In conjunction with LACMA's 24-hour screening of Christian Marclay's timepiece montage, The Clock, L.A.-based performance artist Dawn Kaspar will present a 24-hour show appropriately titled, Donuts & Clocks, which features — you guessed it — doughnuts and clocks, represented both literally and conceptually.

From noon until 4:00 p.m., muse over Dawn Kasper's drawings while sampling Eden's Herbals doughnuts hand-made by artists Eden Batki, Math Bass, Lauren Fisher and others, in unusual flavors like lavender and lemon, citrus and thyme, and salty chocolate. At 4:00 p.m., nosh on pastries from Bob's Donuts while paying homage to their round shape and fluffy form at a doughnut collage workshop.

The all-night doughnut party will rage until the wee hours of the morning with a karaoke party, handmade tonics from Eden's Herbals, a dance party with KCHUNG radio DJs, and of course, some good old fashioned coffee talk to keep you caffeinated until 9:00 a.m. the next morning, at which point you'll be ready for more artisan doughnuts. Donuts & Clocks ends with a final farewell and the last batch of doughnuts at noon on Sunday. See the full schedule here.
