If you are going to close a street in L.A., you better have a good excuse or an effective strategy to mollify enraged drivers. One group's answer? Polka dots.

Griffith Park Boulevard between Sunset Boulevard, Maltman Avenue and Edgecliffe Drive closed Sunday, The Eastsider LA reports, and it will remain closed for at least a year. Streets for People (what the kids are calling S4P) plans to transform the area, which is already home to two farmers' markets, into a pedestrian plaza complete with planter boxes, green umbrellas and, yes, polka dots.

The park was designed by Los Angeles-based Rios Clemente Hale Studios, whose past work includes everything from the cups at Intelligentsia to the LAC+USC Medical Center.

According to S4P, the idea for Sunset Triangle Park, as the plaza will be known, originated in Silver Lake back in 2006.

City councilman and mayoral candidate Eric Garcetti says the project serves two goals: “Angelenos want safer and more welcoming streets for walking, jogging, and bicycling. And we also seek public spaces where communities can come together for family and neighborhood activities.”

S4P will be feting the new polka-dotted parklet Sunday, March 4, from 11 am to 2 pm.
