No place in L.A. transports you from the proverbial traffic jam to the ancient Delphic world like the Getty Villa's Barbara and Lawrence Fleischman Theater, a lovely outdoor venue inspired by the Greeks and Romans. New York-based theater group SITI Company is returning for the villa's annual outdoor theater production. This year, Aeschylus' poignant and lyrical The Persians recounts the defeat of King Xerxes and his Persian army by the Athenians in the Battle of Salamis in 480 B.C.E. Director Anne Bogart has been lauded for her visually stunning and rhapsodic adaptation based on Aaron Poochigian's translation, with sound design by Tony Award winner Darron L. West. The oldest surviving Greek play, The Persians is layered with modern and relevant themes of war, loss, social and political unrest. Come early and explore the galleries in time to brush up on your ancient history before the show.
