Even in this age of carbon nanotube invisibility cloaks and Martian rovers, it's still encouraging to encounter people who enjoy what in scientific terms is known as a “charmed life.” Dick Van Dyke is one of those people: a newlywed, a television pioneer and pretty handy with an Emmy. He performs tonight with a cappella group The Vantastix in tonight's “A Night With Dick Van Dyke and The Vantastix,” a benefit for the Malibu Stage Company, where he's most recently performed with brother Jerry in a revival of The Sunshine Boys. They say you shouldn't meet your heroes, a sentiment that's just a corruption of the old chestnut, “Whom the gods notice, they destroy.” This explains why there aren't as many gods swanning about lately. But Van Dyke, in all his avuncular charm and good humor, is not so much a god as an artist who has for decades danced on the cusp of the legendary — better to catch him here and now while he's still a living legend.
