The Mailer Marketing Guru, Barry Gabster, on Finding the Advertising Sweet Spot

Barry Gabster, founder and CEO of InitiateU, has revitalized mailer marketing campaigns resulting in a propelling growth of his business from $800k to $8.5M in 2021  In fact, all of his growth is credited to organic marketing efforts and word-of-mouth.

He has a lot of experience in conquering challenges, having began in the mortgage industry, faced the financial crisis and recession in 2008, and ultimately going out on his own. Gabster recently opened his doors to all clients in the mortgage lending space. He spent roughly eight years at a direct mail agency and, in 2018, decided to make his move in launching InitiateU, while being well equipped to serve the industry and possessing a deep understanding of how to best meet client needs.

“When I broke away, I had new energy … and got fired up! I started going for it; taking on clients, working late and hiring more people,” said Gabster. “I created a community and circle of support, a backing behind me and that is a testament to how I’ve gotten all my clients. I don’t burn bridges. There’s always a problem to fix. I massage out the kinks if there’s ever an issue with a client to make sure they stay.”

When COVID-19 crept its way into our lives, in 2020, Gabster already had found a way to navigate around it to meet company and client needs. Mortgage lenders during this time of unrest began spending money on mailers like never before, while the real estate market, itself, was absolutely booming with homebuyers and sellers looking to make their way out of big cities. Gabster’s mailers were at the forefront of business and increased the possibilities for the industry.

Gabster and Co. distribute roughly 450,000 mailers to clients each week, making for almost two million per month and 24 million every year.

These numbers are significant, especially since it has long been believed that the direct-mail marketing channel was seemingly ‘inefficient’. Additionally, in 2020, direct mailers saw the highest average response rate it had seen since 2003.

His primary clientele includes marketers seeking to make a little extra, but also that of primary lending companies like, AmeriSave Mortgage Corp., Sun West Mortgage Company, Mutual of Omaha Mortgage, and many others.

“I know how to make the phone ring. This is who I am as a person. It’s in my DNA,” he said. “I built that bridge from what’s going on inside the company to whats going on outside too.”
