In the Jewish faith, food is not just for sustenance, it's a ritualized part of a holistic, compassionate approach to life. To be considered edible, ingredients must meet kashrut rules, meaning it is fit or proper to be eaten.

At the Kosher Palate in Redondo Beach, owner Michele Grant took that to the next level, making sure that everything they served was organic, sustainable and as local as possible. Good food and social consciousness — the combination worked, but the popular shop will be closing (for at least a month) as of this Friday. 

The closure comes with the news that Grant was diagnosed with breast cancer two months ago and has decided to focus her energy on treatment. The announcement was made on Facebook this morning. 

Grant began her culinary career as one of the founders of the Grilled Cheese Truck before launching her Kosher Palate food truck and storefront, TKP Provisions.

“Starting the Kosher Palate and opening TKP Provisions was a decade-long dream. The acceptance and support from the L.A. Jewish community has been incredible,” she said. “Bringing a dream of helping to change the conversation about kosher food to fruition with the Kosher Palate and TKP Provisions; feeding others has been the thing that's nourished me most in this world,” Grant said. “The decision to put that aside to take care of myself has been the most difficult one I've made. Even if it's just for now.”
