“Wax on, wax off.” If you’re an ’80s baby, this phrase will have an immediate effect on your state of mind: most likely Zenlike awareness, followed by warm nostalgia — all thanks to the teachings of Mr. Miyagi. The World War II veteran and karate master hero played by Pat Morita in The Karate Kid developed such an intimate father/son bond with young Daniel LaRusso, played by Ralph Macchio, that their on-screen chemistry inspired three generations of film sequels. None was as beautiful and simple as the original, though, with LaRusso watching in wonder as Mr. Miyagi caught flies with his chopsticks, and Mr. Miyagi having Danny endlessly practice his “crane kick” while balancing on wooden plinths on the beach. To celebrate the film’s 30th anniversary, Cal State Northridge will screen the classic in the very place where Danny defeated Johnny Lawrence and his horrible karate sensei, John Kreese, during the All-Valley Karate Tournament — inside the Matadome! Inspired by Jared Cowan’s June 19 L.A. Weekly cover story about the movie’s legacy, the event includes director John G. Avildsen, screenwriter Robert Mark Kamen and actor Martin “Sensei” Kove in a postscreening Q&A moderated by the Weekly’s Karate Kid expert, writer/photographer Cowan. Cal State Northridge Matadome Gymnasium, 18111 Nordhoff St., Northridge; Sun., Nov. 9, 5:30 p.m.; $10. (818) 890-2928, tkk30.bpt.me/
