Director Darko Tresnjak and L.A. Opera pull out all the stops with a full production of composer John Corigliano and librettist William M. Hoffman's fanciful 1991 operatic reincarnation of characters from Pierre Beaumarchais' plays. In Hoffman’s story, Beaumarchais himself becomes a character, interacting with his own misbehaving creations from The Barber of Seville, The Marriage of Figaro and The Guilty Mother. Patricia Racette stars as the disconsolate ghost of Marie Antoinette, while Broadway singer Patti LuPone beguiles as an exotic temptress with a thing for grand entrances. With a large orchestra conducted by the ever-masterful James Conlon, lavish costumes by Linda Cho, and scenery designer Alexander Dodge's magnificent set, which resembles and rivals the royal theater in Versailles, this is one of L.A. Opera's most extravagant and visually striking productions to date.
