Highways' artistic director, Leo Garcia, has assembled a fab four of Ilaan Egeland Mazzini, Arianne MacBean, Carmela Hermann and Keith Glassman for the third edition of the biennial series 4-Headed Dance. Mazzini's starting point for her R-rated, whipped cream–infused In Record Time was several slightly “pornograph” phonograph album covers discovered among her mother's record collection. MacBean's Living Lessons concerns misunderstanding, or maybe that's missed understanding. Known for her equal mastery of choreographed and improvised dances, Hermann's untitled solo considers the planned and the improvised elements in the structure of a day. Taking a break from the solos, duets and trios in his ongoing series of coffeehouse performances around metro L.A., Keith Glassman unveils a sextet, Repeat After Me. Granted the shared-evening format provides only a snapshot of these seasoned choreographers' extensive work, but it's a valuable overview of four vibrant threads in the rich tapestry of L.A. dance and dance making.
