With Disney's animated Frozen derived from Hans Christian Andersen's Snow Queen clearly a hit, California Contemporary Ballet would appear prescient offering a ballet version of Snow Queen. But this is no quick effort to capitalize on the current film. This Snow Queen has been the ballet company's holiday calling card for 16 years, with its professional dancers joined by CCB's junior company. Choreographed by artistic director Aerin Holt with original music by Randall Michael Tobin, Snow Queen long ago established itself as a popular alternative holiday ballet to the Nutcracker. Unlike the Disney film, which bears only a faint resemblance to the seven Andersen stories, CCB's version closely adheres to their storyline, following a young girl's search for her dearest friend after his perception is poisoned by a shard from a devil's mirror, allowing him to be kidnapped by the Snow Queen. The heroine's adventures allow for an array of dances, aerial acrobatics and gymnastics before the final pas de deux and happy ending. Glendale Community College, 1500 N.
