Last Sunday night, in Edinburgh, Scotland, I finished the last show of my Frequent Flyer Tour, that started in Dublin, Ireland on January 12th of this year. One hundred and forty-two shows later, it was over. Immediately, I only wished for another week of shows at the Edinburgh Festival, having had such a great time and not wanting to leave. A few hours later, I was on a plane headed to London and then onto Los Angeles.

Upon arriving at customs, I was glad to not get hassled, which has become quite a regular occurrence for me. A generic example after a perusal of the visas in my passport:

“Why did you go to Syria?”

          “Because I'm curious.”

          “Why are you curious?”

“Why are you curious that I'm curious?”

“You know it's hot there.”

“Hot enough to fry an egg on your head.”

“That's not what I meant.”

I am sure many of you have had that same revelation I have had so many times as your flight approaches Los Angeles and you see that red and brown haze over the city and realize that you are going to be breathing that nonstop very soon. There is nothing quite like walking out of the doors of the airport into THAT.

I watched Glenn Beck's revelatory speech at the Lincoln Memorial last Saturday via Internet. I am still looking for a transcript so I can re-read all my favorite parts. Try as I might, at the time of this writing, I can't find it. I like it when Mr. Beck tries to make himself cry and his voice gets all choked up. He tried a couple of times at the Restoration Fest but he couldn't seem to get it happening. His aimless ramblings didn't make me want to make God the center of my life but at one point, I was reminded of something Rodney Dangerfield's Caddyshack character Al Czervik said, “Now I see why tigers eat their young . . .” I think I understand what he was getting at now. Democracy, what a long strange trip it's been.

Last night, I was at the Grammy Museum for the 40th Anniversary of Miles Davis' Bitches Brew album. I was one of the panelists. KCRW's Jeremy Sole was also on the panel as was Miles' son Aaron and clarinet player Bennie Maupin, who played on the album. Their stories about Miles were great. Bitches Brew is one of those albums I come back to over and over, year after year and it never grows old. I remember one night in Paris in 1992, I think it was. I had the tour bus to myself post show. I turned off the lights in the bus and put Bitches Brew on the bus system and listened to it while the traffic roared by outside.

I have been traveling fairly nonstop since last October.

Either on my own or on tour, I have been on the road more than off of it for over ten months. I still have a ways to go. The next few filings here will be tricky, as some of the locations I will be in might not have all the internet access one would hope for. I think I will be able to faithfully report in once a week. For the next few weeks, it's going to get interesting, to say the least. Life is too short for anything else, I reckon.

Enough of this “content”, there's more content to input! Music time!

Some of you have heard of the wonderful invention of radio. There's a station called KCRW and it can be found at 89.9 on your FM dial. I have a show there every Saturday evening from 6 to 8 pm and if I were you, I would check it out and make your life better. From 8 until 10 pm, Liza Richardson will be taking over and then handing over to Mario Cotto, who will take it until the midnight hour. It's six hours of well considered radio, please check it out if you can. Get more info at KCRW.com.

Here's the list of all the songs we will be getting into this Saturday. It's a great batch of jams, I hope you get a chance to listen live or via archive. You can do that, you know. And now, the broadcast notes.

Until next week!

KCRW BROADCAST #79

09-04-10

Fanatics! Even the briefest look at tonight's track listing, you will notice a bit of a concept happening. Could it be that every few songs, there's one that comes from a distant land? No, not Arkansas, I mean really distant. Nothing gets by you.

By the time you are rocking this show on tha K, KCRW 89.9, where the FM is divine, I will be up, up in the air, winging my way to China and onward from there. If you look through the tracks tonight, you will get some hints as to where I will be traveling.

Engineer X and I have been working on the upcoming shows for quite some time and they are all ready to go. I will be back with you live in a few weeks.

Many of you long-time Fanatics are used to my postings from great distances–thanks for putting up with my restless global bouncing. I will be all over the place in September. As you can probably guess, I will be grabbing music from every possible location I can and bringing it back for us to check out in the upcoming weeks and months.

Yesterday, I listened to the new Crystal Castles record twice and the new album by The Sword as well. They have both been out for awhile, they were waiting for me at the office when I got in a couple of days ago. Pretty cool listens, so get ready for tracks from those as well as some of that new Grinderman album that will come out very soon. I have not heard it yet. I am sure many of you savvy surfers have found a way to check it out. I will be happy to wait and hear it in October when I get back from this next journey.

The Ly Ngúa Ô track is my personal favorite track from tonight's show. I have been playing this one over and over. I hope you all dig tonight's show. Thanks for all the cool letters from last week, always great to hear from you. Until next week, I hope you dig tonight's jams and get ready for one of the bestest shows we have ever put together, it's our 09-11-10 broadcast and a lot of work went into it. I have been playing all the songs from this one over and over and I think we have a great one, so dig it if you can. Until we get back together next week, dig that crazy trumpet overdub on that Fats track and STAY FANATIC!!! –Henry
