Who knew? The Four Points by Sheraton at LAX, aka “The Beer Hotel”, has been serving craft beer in their Brewster's bar since 2000, making them one of the forerunners of the burgeoning L.A. beer scene. Hotel GM Phil Baxter opened Brewster's in the hotel lobby with ten taps, nine that rotate every time a keg blows. Only North Coast Brewing's Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout on nitro stays put, as Baxter points out, “because it's just too good to replace.”

Baxter has been hosting “Beer Appreciation Nights” on the second Friday of each month inside Brewster's, but got the idea to take advantage of the summer weather and move the event out to the hotel pool this Friday night, July 8 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. The evening pool party will feature 12 summer craft beers, such as Green Flash Summer Saison, Schneider Edelweiss, Allagash White, and Yona Yona Ale from Japan. Local favorites Strand Brewing and Tustin Brewing will also be sending over a couple surprise beers for attendees. To soak up all that beer, pitmaster Larry James will be grilling up Texas BBQ with Texas sides.

The event costs $30 for 3 oz. pours of all 12 summer brews plus the BBQ. Hotel parking will be validated which, if you've stayed at a major hotel lately, is about a $25 savings. And Baxter says if you go to Twitter on Friday, they'll offer a discount code to get in for $20. He points out, “we're losing money on this event but we want Angelenos to come and see what we have to offer: great beer, good food, and Brewster's has just been remodeled with 17 flat screen TVs for watching the games.”

If you can't make the summer beer/Texas BBQ/pool party Friday night, you can check out Brewster's inside the hotel anytime. Baxter says the idea is to offer fresh, local beer from L.A. and O.C. He tells us, “We get beer from local brewers that has been kegged the day before.” That's the next best thing to being in the tasting room at the brewery. And, hey. You can't watch 747s landing right overhead at the brewery.
