For more than two decades, Hayley Ferreira has been transforming blank walls into vibrant works of art. As the owner of The Bay Area Muralist, she is celebrating a milestone: over 20 years as a career muralist whose work has left its mark on homes, businesses, and corporate spaces across the country.
“I never imagined this would be my path,” said Ferreira. “When I painted my first mural in a friend’s salon, I didn’t even know mural painting was a profession. I had to look up what a mural was. But once I started, the demand grew, and I never looked back.”
Ferreira’s journey began with a passion for art that stretched back to childhood. She once dreamed of becoming a cartoonist, though her family doubted she could build a career from art. Instead, she studied visual design and later worked as a visual manager. Her career seemed headed in another direction until the dot-com bust in Silicon Valley changed her course.

“I was laid off from a corporate job, and I suddenly had the time to paint,” she explained. “That time allowed me to rediscover my love for art.”
Her leap of faith came when she used her car payment to fund a booth at a home and garden show. “It was such a risk, I thought, if this doesn’t work, I’ll lose my car,” Ferreira recalled. “But people loved the concept of murals. At the time, it wasn’t something most people had seen before.” The gamble paid off, launching her business into steady demand as homeowners and companies alike sought her work.
From those early projects, Ferreira’s reputation spread by word of mouth, leading to larger commissions. She has painted murals for major brands and even appeared on national television, including a competition show where she and her team created large-scale edible art. Fourteen years ago, a major brewery flew her to Denver for professional mural training, a turning point that expanded her corporate portfolio.

“What I have learned is that art evolves with the spaces it inhabits,” Ferreira said. “When I started, murals were not mainstream. Now, businesses and homeowners see them as essential in shaping environments and experiences.”
Today, The Bay Area Muralist is more than a mural studio. Ferreira has expanded into printing, offering custom canvases, wallpaper, decals, and even paint-by-number mural kits designed for DIY enthusiasts. Her mission also includes supporting fellow artists by providing printing services and referrals for projects she cannot personally take on.
Despite the growing competition in mural art, Ferreira remains confident in her approach. “There are so many muralists now, it’s become a trend. But the relationships I build with my clients set me apart. For me, it’s never just about the artwork. It’s about trust, connection, and creating something that brings joy.”
As The Bay Area Muralist enters its next chapter, Ferreira reflects on what the milestone means. “Looking back, I’m proud of taking that first leap and sticking with it. Art has given me a career, lifelong friendships, and the ability to share beauty with others. I can’t wait to see what the next 20 years bring.”
