Britney Spears going bald wasn't nearly as earth-shattering as when The Cure frontman Robert Smith chopped off his trademark tumbleweed of hair in the mid-'80s. You can see this in the beginning of The Cure: In Orange, when bassist Simon Gallup playfully snatches off Smith's wig to reveal — gasp — a crew cut. Directed by Tim Pope and released in 1987 (but still not on DVD), the movie captures The Cure's 1986 performance at the Théâtre Antique d'Orange, a 1st-century Roman site in the South of France. Smith and the boys play a 23-song set of material ranging from the band's 1979 debut, Three Imaginary Boys, to 1985's The Head on the Door. Fans will know Pope as the man behind dozens of Cure videos (he also made vids for David Bowie, Neil Young, Siouxsie and the Banshees and many others), and hard-core fans will recall Pope's song “I Want to Be a Tree,” recorded with The Cure. Orange is a standard concert film but a hoot for anyone who doesn't remember when Smith was thin. Another blast from the past? The audience pogoing — a stark contrast to the band's L.A. gig at the Forum that same year, where a concertgoer was arrested for stabbing himself. Clearly, we're the bigger Cure fans.
