The James Beard Chef Awards have just wrapped up in New York City, and Los Angeles took home zero awards.

It's hard to resist feeling kinda whiny when looking at the list of winners and considering that New York City got 7 awards and accounted for 50% of all the non-region-specific awards (as well as having their very own region). Chicago took 3 awards. San Francisco took 2. But L.A. has nothing this year worthy of recognizing? It's a little deflating.

What could we have won? In Best Chef in the West, Jon Shook and Vinny Dototlo were up for an award, and we were looking strong in both the Restaurateur of the Year category, where Piero Selvaggio of Valentino Restaurant Group and Caroline Styne of

Lucques were nominees, and in the Outstanding Chef category, where both Nancy Silverton and Suzanne Goin were nominees. Both times, L.A. was beaten out by NYC (and Chicago, where Paul Kahan of Blackbird in Chicago tied with NYC's David Chang for Outstanding Chef).

We offer our sincere congratulations to all the winners, and our sincere disappointment that L.A. didn't fare better. Thankfully this will all happen again next year, and we can hope for a smidge of the glory again then. Here's the full list of winners:
