It appears the idea of Halloween worms its way into the collective psyche earlier and earlier each year, and today the Hive Gallery and Studios throws open the gates of Samhain with its October Haunted House Themed Show. Perhaps downtown's most eclectic space, a kind of swap-meet buffet of low-brow and fine art, with presenting artists and their wares nestled into honeycomblike vestibules, the Hive hosts a raucous monthly shindig, presenting up to 60 artists, a dozen performances, live painting and other surprises throughout the evening. Interpreting notions of the haunted house, dozens of artists will transform the space, while We Are/She Is, Lovers Drugs, The Nothing and others perform in spooky fashion. Tarot readings by Seraphime Angelis, a bit of burlesque and neon and fabric installations will be thrown in for good measure. Costumes of a fantastic (but breathable) nature are strongly encouraged — no doubt the night will be packed and abuzz in “boo.” Hive Gallery, 729 S. Spring St., dwntwn.; Sat., Oct. 1, 8 p.m.; $8, $5 in costume; exhibit runs thru Oct. 29. (213) 955-9051, hivegallery.com.

Sat., Oct. 1, 8 p.m.; Wednesdays-Saturdays. Starts: Oct. 1. Continues through Oct. 29, 2011
