Getting into a car crash is bad enough.

But when two drivers got out to exchange information after a fender bender in La Canada Flintridge yesterday, they were greeted by thousands of bees that proceeded to sting them furiously.

A 17-year-old girl was down on the street and covered with bees when an L.A. County Sheriff's Department deputy came to her rescue:

One witness said even her face was covered.

The deputy used a fire extinguisher and then a garden hose to get the bees off the girl, who was then taken to a hospital, the sheriff's department said.

The driver of the other car, a 51-year-old woman, ran into the pool of a nearby residence, according to deputies. She was also taken to a hospital.

It happened at 2:49 p.m. in the 2000 block of Los Amigos Street in La Canada Flintridge, sheriff's officials said.

One of the two cars involved in the crash hit a tree that housed a beehive, they said.

When the two drivers got out, the bees attacked. As the 51-year-old headed to the pool and dove in, the bees followed and swarmed her, according to television reports. The teen went down for some reason and was also swarmed.

According to a statement from the Sheriff's Department:

The first deputy to arrive saw the 17 year-old on the ground covered in bees, and used his fire extinguisher to remove the bees from her body. He assisted her to her feet and they both ran to safety. The deputy then used the hose from a nearby residence to remove the rest of the bees from the teen.

The two victims were stung hundreds of times, sheriff's officials said. The deputy who came to the rescue was also stung but did not require hospitalization, they said.

A pest control company removed the hive.
