L.A. Times architecture critic Christopher Hawthorne introduces Doug Suisman, who discusses his book, Los Angeles Boulevard: Eight X-Rays of the Body Public. Originally published in 1989, this 25th anniversary edition includes maps, photographs and essays that explore the history and geography of L.A.’s iconic boulevards – Sunset, Hollywood, Wilshire. Suisman, an architect and founder of Suisman Urban Design, also delves into the development of the La Brea Tar Pits from tar pools to private ranch to world-renowned landmark, and how it relates to ongoing changes, including a subway line, high-rises and expansion of LACMA.
