Former “Next Iron Chef” contestant and renowned L.A. chef Andrew Kirschner is set to open his first restaurant by December 1. Tar and Roses on Santa Monica Blvd., between 5th and 6th streets, will house a highly touted wood-burning oven, which should make for some earthy, rustic flavoring. Some restaurants change their menu each day depending on the produce they receive. Tar & Roses will update the menu each day to reveal the wood that's burning in the oven: apple, olive, oak, almond or walnut.

The menu includes snack-sized foods, vegetable dishes, small plates and large portions. We're interested in the “garlic soup/sourdough croutons/paprika/poached egg” combination and the snack-sized “popped corn/crisp bacon/brown sugar/chili.”

Kirschner left his position as partner/executive chef at the Wilshire restaurant back in February.
