Spiders are creepy, that much we can agree on, yeah? But when 37-year-old Sven Koppler of Wachtberg, Germany, allegedly imported hundreds of tarantulas to L.A., the feds got PETA on his ass and dragged him to court.

Turns out bringing the pets/pests in the U.S. constitutes “illegally importing wildlife into the United States,” according to the U.S. Attorney's Office in L.A. Bringing the spiders stateside would also violate the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species law.

So Koppler faces a possible 20 years behind bars and $250,000 fine. For importing spiders?

We received some self-righteous comments about Koppler's alleged crime. A contrarian among the bunch, and our commenter of the day, Taylor, says spiders should be treated more like bed bugs than precious cargo:

I hate to tell you … but the public is with us on this one … a spider is not a pet, its something I smash with a shoe or news paper when it enters my domicile.

What do you think?
