The Huntington Beach City Council is slated to vote on Monday whether or not it should annex the neighboring community of Sunset Beach.

The move would expect to bring Huntington Beach about $624,000 in property, sales and occupancy taxes.

Some community members, however, are not thrilled about the possibility of annexation.

Members of the Sunset Community Association have been vocally opposed to becoming part of Huntington Beach.

Sunset Beach Community Association President Greg Griffin told The Orange County Register in June that Huntington Beach could make money from Sunset without the annexation.

“Without having to take the political baggage of squashing a small beach city, we could contract them for police and other services and it would work out just as revenues positive for them and we could be independent,” he told the newspaper.

The annexation will have to go through a planning commission meeting and another city council meeting before a final decision is made.

Our sister blog at OC Weekly, Navel Gazing, notes that Sunset Beach is home to a few medical marijuana dispensaries, while Huntington Beach has shut them out.
