July is National Ice Cream Month. Why? Because it's hot! And ice cream is cold! And also, coz Ronald Reagan said so. No, really. He also apparently declared both July 15 and the 3rd Sunday in July National Ice Cream Day. Poor old Ronnie, always being all confused and naming two days national ice cream day… Anyway, seems as though the PR folks of the world have latched on to the 3rd Sunday thing, so…Sunday is National Ice Cream Day! Woooo-hoooo!

In order to properly celebrate the day, we bring you the Squid Ink ice cream primer. Turn the page for basically everything you ever needed to know about ice cream in Los Angeles.

Don't spend Sunday eating bad ice cream out of ignorance. Check out our list of the Top 10 Ice Cream and Gelato Shops In Los Angeles.

A couple of years back, our then-food writer Elina Skatkin undertook the task of eating 30 ice cream scoops in 30 days. Read about her findings here.

There are a couple of national promotions for the day: Baskin-Robbins is having a Twitter promotion that could win you ice cream for a year. Carvel is offering a junior ice cream cone for $0.99, but only if you go to their Facebook page and then print out a coupon, which doesn't really seem worth it because a buck isn't even that cheap for a little old ice cream cone, but whatever.

Happy licking — you'd make Ronnie proud.
