Last week we were psyched about rain, a possible cool down, and a hint of fall.

Well, it rained, but it stayed warm, and now we're starting to wonder if this is a full-on Indian summer.

The National Weather Service is predicting a hot weekend, possibly starting today, with “widespread 80s away from the coast and 90s in hotter valley locations,” according to a statement.

It's going to be so hot, in fact, that the NWS is warning of an “increased threat of heat-related illnesses.” It's suggesting that heat-sensitive people  stay in the shade and drink plenty of water. Homeless people, the elderly and infants are especially at risk, forecasters said.

We know — it's almost surreal dealing with this at a time when some retailers are kicking off holiday advertising campaigns.

Blame a high-pressure system that is moving over the area and pushing warm air from the desert to the sea.

“Gusty offshore winds are possible through and below favored passes and canyons of Los Angeles and Ventura Counties through Saturday,” the NWS says.

Some parts of L.A. will see highs in the mid-90s — temps that the NWS describes as “well above normal.” A low of 67 was expected Saturday, says private forecaster AccuWeather. Sunday's overnight low was pegged at 62.

Don't move back to Wisconsin just yet.

Onshore ocean breezes were expected to return Monday, pushing lows into the high 50s and bringing cooler highs to our fair city. We've even seen some television forecasters call for rain midweek.

AccuWeather states that “a potential storm system” could “return showers to the area around Thursday.”
